Embark on an unforgettable 12-day safari through Uganda’s most famous national parks—Lake Mburo, Bwindi Impenetrable, Queen Elizabeth, and Murchison Falls. This comprehensive tour offers you an incredible experience of Uganda’s natural beauty, abundant wildlife, and cultural diversity. From tracking endangered gorillas to game drives in savannah plains and boat cruises along mighty rivers, this safari promises to leave you with lasting memories.
Your adventure begins the moment you touch down at Entebbe International Airport. Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by your safari guide, who will transfer you to your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala, depending on your arrival time. The rest of the day is yours to relax and acclimate. Take the opportunity to explore the hotel grounds or nearby attractions and get a good night’s sleep before the safari begins.
After breakfast, you will depart Entebbe for Lake Mburo National Park. The drive takes approximately four hours, passing through Uganda’s vibrant countryside. En- route, you will stop at the Uganda Equator line, a popular photo stop. Here, you’ll witness demonstrations of the Coriolis effect, which visually shows how water drains differently in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. You can also shop for souvenirs from local artisans.
Lake Mburo National Park is Uganda’s smallest savannah park, but it is a wildlife hotspot. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including zebras, impalas, elands, buffaloes, and leopards. The park’s defining feature is its rich acacia woodland and five lakes, with Lake Mburo being the largest. The park also supports over 350 bird species, making it a paradise for bird watchers. Its scenic beauty and relatively small size make it a great starting point for your safari.
Upon arrival, you will have lunch at your lodge before embarking on a short evening game drive to spot some of the park’s diverse wildlife, including herds of zebras, impalas, and topis grazing in the savannah plains.
Your day begins with a guided early morning nature walk. Walking safaris are one of the highlights of Lake Mburo National Park, allowing you to explore the park on foot with an experienced guide. The walk provides a unique opportunity to observe wildlife up close, including antelopes, zebras, and birds, while learning about the ecosystem and plant life from your guide.
In the afternoon, you will enjoy a boat ride on Lake Mburo, where you can spot water-loving creatures such as hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species like kingfishers, pelicans, and the African fish eagle.
After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, driving through scenic rolling hills and lush farmlands. The journey takes you to the southern part of the park, specifically to the Rushaga sector. You will check in at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge, known for its comfortable accommodations and breathtaking views of the surrounding forest.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its population of mountain gorillas. Nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas live within its thick forests, making it one of the best places in the world for gorilla trekking. Apart from gorillas, Bwindi is home to over 120 mammal species, 350 bird species, and a variety of reptiles, butterflies, and trees. The park’s dense forest and rugged terrain make it an adventure-packed destination.
This is the day you’ve been waiting for—an extraordinary gorilla trekking experience. After an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Accompanied by park rangers and guides, you’ll trek through the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family. Once you find the gorillas, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
In the late afternoon, you can opt for a cultural experience with a visit to the Batwa community. The Batwa, an indigenous people who once lived as hunter-gatherers in the Bwindi forest, offer insights into their unique culture and traditions. You’ll learn about their way of life, listen to traditional songs, and take part in a village tour.
After breakfast, you will leave Bwindi and drive towards the southern Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. This area is famous for its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior observed in only a few places in the world.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most diverse and popular national park. It offers a variety of ecosystems, including savannah, lakes, wetlands, and lush forests. The park is home to an abundance of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and over 600 bird species. The Ishasha sector is particularly well-known for its unique tree-climbing lions, which are often seen lounging in fig trees.
In the evening, you will enjoy a game drive to try and spot these elusive lions, as well as other wildlife like buffalo, antelopes, and warthogs. Your overnight stay will be at Jungle Lodge, offering stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.
Today, you’ll head to the northern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park for more wildlife viewing. The drive will take you through the park’s picturesque savannah plains, where you may spot elephants, buffalo, lions, and other animals along the way.
In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride on the famous Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway that connects Lake George and Lake Edward. The boat ride provides excellent opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species. You’ll also witness large numbers of animals coming to the water to drink. Afterward, you’ll return to Buffalo Lodge for dinner and overnight accommodation.
Your day starts with an exciting chimpanzee tracking experience in Kyambura Gorge, also known as the “Valley of Apes.” This lush tropical rainforest is home to a variety of primates, but chimpanzees are the main attraction. Tracking these highly intelligent and social creatures in their natural environment is both exhilarating and educational.
In the evening, you’ll enjoy another game drive to spot more of Queen Elizabeth’s wildlife, such as lions, leopards, and elephants.
Today, you will embark on a full-day tour of the Bunyaruguru community, located near the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. The Bunyaruguru community offers an immersive cultural experience, giving you the chance to interact with local people, learn about their traditional farming techniques, and participate in a village walk. You’ll also witness traditional crafts, such as basket weaving, and enjoy performances of music and dance.
After breakfast, you will drive to the Kasenda Craters, a series of scenic volcanic craters located near Fort Portal. Here, you will take a walk to the “Top of the World,” a stunning viewpoint offering panoramic views of the crater lakes and surrounding landscape. After the walk, you’ll drive to Crater Safari Lodge, where you can relax and enjoy the serenity of the beautiful crater lakes.
Today, you’ll drive to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest national park. Murchison Falls is renowned for its powerful waterfall, where the Nile River squeezes through a narrow gorge before plunging 43 meters into the river below.
Murchison Falls National Park is a haven for wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, lions, leopards, and various species of antelope. The park is also home to over 450 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork. The highlight of the park is Murchison Falls, one of the most powerful waterfalls in the world.
You will arrive at Murchison Falls River Lodge, where you’ll have dinner and overnight accommodation.
On your final full day of safari, you’ll start with an early morning game drive through the savannah plains of Murchison Falls National Park. You’ll have the chance to spot large herds of elephants, giraffes, and buffalo, as well as lions and leopards.
In the afternoon, take a boat cruise on the Nile River towards the base of Murchison Falls. This boat ride is a highlight of any trip to the park, offering the opportunity to see hippos, crocodiles, and various water birds up close. The sight of the waterfall from the river is truly spectacular.
On your final day, you will drive to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located about two hours from Murchison Falls.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can track wild rhinos on foot. The sanctuary was established to reintroduce rhinos to Uganda after they were wiped out in the 1980s. Here, you’ll get the chance to learn about rhino conservation and observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
After the rhino tracking experience, you’ll have lunch and then continue your journey back to Entebbe, where your safari concludes.
