Embark on an unforgettable adventure with our 5 Days Uganda Primate Safari, a journey that promises to bring you face-to-face with some of the most fascinating primates in the world. This safari combines the thrill of tracking chimpanzees in Kibale National Park with the awe-inspiring experience of gorilla trekking in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. From lush forests to breathtaking landscapes, this safari offers an immersive experience into the heart of Uganda’s rich biodiversity.
Your adventure begins upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport. Here, you will be warmly welcomed by our safari guide who will brief you on the upcoming journey. After a short rest, you will embark on a scenic drive to Kibale National Park, known for its remarkable population of chimpanzees. The journey takes approximately 5-6 hours, passing through picturesque landscapes, tea plantations, and traditional Ugandan villages.
Upon arrival in Kibale, you will check into your lodge for the night. Accommodations range from luxury lodges to comfortable mid-range options, ensuring a restful night before the excitement of the next day. In the evening, you can enjoy a leisurely walk around the lodge or simply relax and soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
The second day of your safari is dedicated to tracking the lively and intelligent chimpanzees of Kibale National Park. After an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing by the park rangers. Kibale National Park is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees, making it one of the best places in the world for chimpanzee tracking.
The tracking experience can last anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on the location of the chimpanzees. As you trek through the dense forest, you’ll also have the opportunity to spot other primate species such as the red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, and the rare L’Hoest’s monkey. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 375 bird species recorded.
Once you find the chimpanzees, you will spend an hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching these intelligent creatures interact, groom each other, and play is a truly mesmerizing experience. After the tracking, you will return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, you can opt for a guided nature walk in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, located near Kibale National Park. This community-based project is an excellent opportunity to see more primates, birds, and butterflies while supporting local conservation efforts.
On the third day, you will embark on a journey to either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, depending on your preference and the availability of gorilla permits. Both parks offer unique experiences and are home to the endangered mountain gorillas.
The drive to Bwindi or Mgahinga is long but incredibly scenic, taking you through the beautiful Ugandan countryside, past rolling hills, terraced farms, and traditional villages. You will have several stops along the way to stretch your legs, take photos, and enjoy the stunning landscapes.
Upon arrival at your chosen park, you will check into your lodge. Bwindi offers a range of accommodations from luxury lodges to budget-friendly options, while Mgahinga has fewer lodges but equally comfortable choices. In the evening, you can relax and prepare for the highlight of your safari – gorilla trekking.
The fourth day of your safari is dedicated to the extraordinary experience of gorilla trekking. After an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking. The briefing is essential to ensure both your safety and the well-being of the gorillas.
Gorilla trekking can be a challenging activity, requiring you to hike through dense forest, steep slopes, and sometimes muddy trails. However, the effort is more than worth it when you finally come face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas. The moment you see these gentle giants up close, the fatigue of the trek will disappear, replaced by awe and wonder.
You will spend an hour with the gorillas, observing their behaviour, watching them feed, play, and interact with each other. This hour is bound to be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. After the trek, you will return to the lodge for a well-deserved rest and lunch.
In the afternoon, you can explore the local community and engage in cultural activities. Visits to nearby villages offer insights into the traditional lifestyles of the Batwa people, who have lived in harmony with the forest for centuries. This cultural exchange adds a rich dimension to your safari experience.
On the final day of your safari, you will enjoy a leisurely breakfast before starting your journey back to Entebbe. The drive back provides another opportunity to enjoy the beautiful Ugandan landscape. You will pass through several towns and have the chance to buy souvenirs and local crafts as mementoes of your trip.
Upon arrival in Entebbe, depending on your flight schedule, you might have time to visit the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre. These sites offer a chance to see more wildlife and learn about Uganda’s conservation efforts.
Finally, you will be transferred to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight, marking the end of an incredible 5-day Uganda primate safari.
