This 7-day safari itinerary will take you through some of Uganda’s most iconic destinations, providing unforgettable memories from your arrival to departure. From the lush rainforests of Kibale to the savannahs of Queen Elizabeth National Park and the mystical Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, this safari promises an adventure of a lifetime.
Your Ugandan adventure begins as you arrive at Entebbe International Airport. Situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, Entebbe is the perfect gateway to your safari journey. Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed by your safari guide who will assist with your luggage and transfer you to your hotel.
After a long flight, take some time to relax and unwind at your hotel. Entebbe offers a tranquil setting, with many hotels providing beautiful views of Lake Victoria. Depending on your arrival time, you might choose to explore the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, home to a variety of bird species and the occasional sighting of vervet monkeys and colobus monkeys. Enjoy a delicious dinner at your hotel and prepare for the adventure that awaits.
After a hearty breakfast, your safari officially begins with a scenic drive to Kibale National Park, located in Western Uganda. The journey offers breathtaking views of rolling hills, lush tea plantations, and rural Ugandan life. En route, you will stop in Fort Portal, a charming town known for its cool climate and stunning landscapes.
Fort Portal, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains,” is an ideal place for a lunch break. Here, you can savor Ugandan cuisine at one of the local restaurants while enjoying the backdrop of the majestic Rwenzori Mountains.
Upon arrival at Kibale National Park, you will check into your lodge, where you can relax before embarking on an evening swamp or nature walk. The Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, located near the park, is a great place to start. This community-run initiative is home to various bird species, primates, and other wildlife. As you stroll through the wetland, you might spot the Great Blue Turaco, one of the most colorful birds in Uganda, as well as black-and-white colobus monkeys.
After the nature walk, return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest. Dinner will be served, and you can enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the rainforest as you prepare for an exciting day ahead.
Day 3 begins with an early morning breakfast before heading out for one of the highlights of your safari: chimpanzee tracking in Kibale National Park. Known as the “Primate Capital of the World,” Kibale is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees. The tracking experience is exhilarating as you venture deep into the forest, following the calls of these intelligent primates. Once you locate a group of chimpanzees, you will have the opportunity to observe them up close, watching their interactions, listening to their vocalizations, and capturing stunning photographs.
After an unforgettable morning with the chimpanzees, you will return to your lodge for lunch. Following your meal, it’s time to hit the road again, this time heading to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The drive offers more beautiful scenery, including the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains and the expansive savannahs of the park.
Upon arrival at Queen Elizabeth National Park, you will check into your lodge and then set out for an evening game drive. The park is one of Uganda’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its diverse ecosystems and abundant wildlife. During the game drive, you may spot elephants, lions, buffaloes, antelopes, and a variety of bird species. The evening light provides excellent conditions for photography, making this experience even more memorable.
After the game drive, you will return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation. Rest well, as another day of adventure awaits.
After an early breakfast, you will head out for a morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park. This is one of the best times to see wildlife, as many animals are more active during the cooler hours of the day. As you drive through the park’s various habitats, keep your eyes peeled for sightings of lions, leopards, elephants, hippos, and more. Your guide will help identify the different species and share fascinating facts about their behavior and habitats.
Following the game drive, return to your lodge for lunch. Take some time to relax and perhaps review the photos you’ve taken so far, as the afternoon promises another exciting activity.
In the afternoon, you will embark on a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway that connects Lake Edward and Lake George. This cruise is one of the highlights of any visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park, offering a unique perspective on the park’s wildlife. As you glide along the water, you’ll see large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a variety of bird species along the shores. Elephants and buffaloes often come to the water to drink, providing incredible photo opportunities.
After the boat cruise, return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation. Reflect on the day’s experiences as you enjoy a peaceful night in the heart of the wilderness.
After breakfast, you will depart for the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, known for its famous tree-climbing lions. The Ishasha Plains offer a different landscape compared to the northern part of the park, with vast savannahs and fig trees where these unique lions are often found resting. A game drive through Ishasha provides an excellent opportunity to spot these elusive creatures as well as other wildlife such as elephants, topis, and buffaloes.
After exploring Ishasha, you will continue your journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, with a lunch stop along the way. The drive to Bwindi takes you through some of Uganda’s most picturesque landscapes, including terraced hillsides and dense forests.
Upon arrival at Bwindi, you will check into your lodge. Bwindi is famous for its population of mountain gorillas, and the anticipation of the following day’s adventure will surely build as you settle in for the night.
This is the day you’ve been waiting for! After an early breakfast, you will head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla tracking. The experienced guides will explain the rules and what to expect during the trek. Once the briefing is complete, you will set off into the forest in search of one of the habituated gorilla families.
Gorilla tracking can take several hours, depending on the location of the gorillas, but the effort is well worth it. Upon finding the gorillas, you will spend an hour observing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Watching a gorilla family interact—seeing the juveniles play, mothers care for their young, and the silverback keep a watchful eye on his group—is an awe-inspiring experience that few are fortunate enough to witness.
After the trek, you will return to your lodge for some well-deserved rest. In the evening, you have the option to take a community walk to learn about the local Batwa culture. The Batwa, also known as the “pygmies,” are the original inhabitants of the Bwindi Forest, and this cultural experience offers insight into their traditional way of life.
Return to your lodge for dinner and your final night in the Ugandan wilderness.
After an early breakfast, it’s time to begin your journey back to Entebbe. The drive will take you through Mbarara, where you will stop for lunch. Mbarara is the largest town in Western Uganda and offers a chance to stretch your legs and enjoy some local food.
As you continue your drive, you will have a stop at the Equator, where you can take photos and participate in the popular water experiment that demonstrates the Coriolis effect. The Equator is also a great place to buy souvenirs to take home as a memory of your Ugandan safari.
You will arrive in Entebbe in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on traffic and the pace of your journey. If time allows, you might have a chance to freshen up at a day room in a hotel before heading to the airport for your departure flight.
